With a heavy heart, Rob Gier packed his bags, left the Philippine camp here and headed back to England Thursday to be with wife, Emma, who has been having a delicate pregnancy with their first child.
The battle-tested defender of the national football team played the first two games of the Azkals, which both ending in draws, in the AFC Challenge Cup group qualifying stage here.
“It wasn’t an easy decision at all,” said the soft-spoken Gier, referring to his departure from the squad at the most critical stage of the tournament.
The 31-year-old Gier, who was instrumental in keeping Myanmar and Palestine at bay, will miss the final group match against Bangladesh on Friday.
The Azkals need to beat Bangladesh to qualify for the main tournament in 2012.
