When the Azkals rage is stilled

This cash-starved country can save a lot of hard-earned taxpayers’ money if only local football officials, including that of the Philippine Sports Commission, will put on hold their plan to renovate the dilapidated Rizal Memorial Stadium as venue for the 2014 World Cup first-round match between the Philippines and Sri Lanka on July 3.
Please, don’t make this World Cup Qualifying so big and costly at the expense of millions of Filipinos during these hard and trying times. Give the football match back to Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City, which successfully hosted the AFC Challenge Cup qualifier between the Philippines and Mongolia last February.
Since the Panaad staged not only the AFC Challenge Cup and some other international soccer spectacle with flying colors, I see no reason why the forthcoming Philippines-Sri Lanka World Cup qualifying should be held at the outmoded Rizal Memorial football turf.
For the record, a crowd of more than 20,000 attended the February match at Panaad, even though the government did not spend so much.
